In 23 subjects with alcoholic cirrhosis, compared with 13 who had hepatic steatosis compatible with chronic alcoholism and also with controls, amounts of plasma calcium and phosphorus and of serum parathyrin were considered normal. In both groups of patients 25-hydroxycholecalciferol was reduced. Serum calcitonin, estimated radioimmunologically, was increased in the cirrhotics in close relation to a rise in alkaline phosphatase activity, but was normal in the other patients. Renal function was not impaired in any subject.
