The distribution of the cingulum fibers to the cerebral cortex in the brains of 22 adult guinea pigs was examined. One study considered the cytoarchitectonics of the cortical areas for the purpose of becoming more closely acquainted with the regions of the presumed distribution of the cingulum fibers, with special reference to the medio-occipital cortex. Twenty-one experimental animals were subjected to right-sided cingulotomy, at different levels, in a fronto-occipital direction. The animal brains were divided into 2 groups, according to the technique chosen for impregnating the histological sections. In every case, the degenerative changes which appeared after experimental cingulotomy were studied in frontal sections from the site of the lesion to the occipital pole of the hemisphere, both inside the cingulum and after the fibers belonging to this complex entered the surrounding cortex. The fibers originally formed a compact stream, but fine small bundles and single fibers successively broke away and entered the relevant cortical areas by breaking through the deep cortical layers; most of them reached the outer lamina zonalis, where they characteristically disintegrated into preterminal or terminal particles.
