The response of the human saphenous vein to pharmacological stimulation in vitro

The results of in vitro stimulation of the human saphenous vein with different vasoactive agents are presented. The parameters characterizing the contractile response are evaluated by fitting the logistic function to the experimental data. All the substances studied (noradrenaline ) show definite contractile properties when tested on the human saphenous vein. Serotonin has the highest affinity and evokes the strongest contraction. Both PGE1 and PGF2.alpha. show a marked response. PGF2.alpha. presents higher values for affinity and dose-response relationship. The results differ from those obtained in animal veins. Considering the frequency of lower limb pathology in humans strips of human saphenous vein are an useful medium for studying vasoactive drugs.
