Excessive iron state in impaired erythropoiesis

High values for iron in urine in the Desferal test suggest an excessive iron state in vivo and the close association of voluminous blood transfusion and disturbed iron metabolism, particularly an increase of nonred cell iron turnover (0.34 mg/kg daily), impaired haematopoiesis and a shortened life-span of red cells. The differences between the iron metabolism in sideroblastic anaemia and that in aplastic anaemia suggest some differences in the presence of iron pool liable to be excreted.
