Ten iron-deficient patients each given a single total-dose infusion of an iron-dextran preparation. The pattern of serum Fe clearance was a double exponential with a fast component half-life of 6.6 h and a slow component half-life of 4.5 days. The pattern of haemoglobin rise was a single exponential. It is concluded that the injected Fe is cleared into more than one pool, that there is a simultaneous feed-back from pools to plasma and that Fe is steadily available for constant rate of haemoglobin synthesis.
