Evidence that some anti-obesity drugs have effects on glucose and lipid metabolism in man is reviewed. Drugs such as fenfluramine, tiflorex, mazindol and ciclazindol may produce long term changes in eating behavior through their influence on peripheral carbohydrate and fat metabolism. All the compounds have central nervous effects. In the case of fenfluramine, it appears that 5-hydroxytryptaminergic mechanisms may be involved in both peripheral and central action of the anti-obesity drugs.
