Determination of t1/2 value for some sulfonamides in the mini-pig

The course of blood levels of 5 sulfonamides injected in minipigs and reported in the literature for dogs, rabbits and man were compared. Blood levels were established at frequent intervals in the minipig, authors calculated and half-life values (t1/2) were calculated by the method of least squares. The t1/2 represents the time from the injection until the blood level dropped to half the initial value. Comparison of t1/2 for the minipig with that for other animals and man showed clear differences. Sulfaphenazole which shows the highest t1/2 value for the minipig occupies only the 3rd position in dog, rabbit and man. Sulfamethoxazole which is rapidly eliminated in the minipig is the most slowly eliminated in man. Sulfacetamide is rapidly eliminated in all animals and in man. It is difficult to apply values determined in 1 animal to another.
