An examination for the presence of sheep scab, carried out in 1975-76 on 831 clinically healthy sheep in the canton of Berne, Switzerland, gave the following results. Two animals were infested with Chorioptes bovis (Her.) (ovis (Zurn)) and 2 others with Sarcoptes scabiei (L.) (ovis Megn.); Psoroptes ovis (Her.) was not found. On a number of animals Ixodes ricinus (L.), Melophagus ovinus (L.) and other ectoparasites were present. The hypothesis that P. ovis exists as a latent infestation was not confirmed. The results indicated that the epidemiological situation in the canton was favourable. In an additional investigation, 9 of 55 sheep (16.3%) were found to be infested with Demodex ovis Raill., with no sign of clinical symptoms. The histopathological lesions caused by D. ovis are described. In the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, 831 clinically healthy sheep were examined. Two animals were infested with Chorioptes bovis (Her.)
