Immunological status of mycetoma patients

A tuberculin test was carried out on 72 patients and 72 normal subjects. Of the mycetoma patients 56 had a negative tuberculin test and only 34 were negative in control group (highly significant difference p = <0.001). A chlordinitrobenzene test was carried out on 13 patients, only 2 of which were positive compared with all 5 controls. In the lymphocyte transformation test in 17 patients, 13 had <60% transformed lymphocytes. IgG was appreciably lower in patients than in controls (p < 0.001). Results indicated deficiency in cell-mediated immunity among mycetoma patients.Causative agents were Streptomyces somaliensis, Actinomadura madurae, A. pelletieri, Nocardia brasiliensis, Madurella mycetomi and Aspergillus nidulans.
