The immunological status of patients with malignant and benign neoplasia was assessed. There was a generalized depression of cell-mediated immunity in patients with malignancies compared to non-tumor bearing controls and patients with benign neoplasia. Of the patients with malignant neoplasm, 62.5% were tuberculin-negative compared to 10% negativity in controls. A higher percentage of patients with relatively limited malignant tumors were tuberculin-positive in comparison to patients with widespread malignancy. In clinical stage I, all patients were tuberculin-positive while in clinical stage IV all were tuberculin-negative, clinical stages II and III showing values which fell between these 2 groups.
