The effect of a single iv injection of luteinizing hormone (100 mcg) (LH)-releasing hormone (LH-RH) on serum levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), LH, and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) was studied in 36 pregnant and 15 normally menstruating women. Pregnant women had lower concentrations of LH and FSH than normally menstruating women in the follicular and luteal phases. Administration of LH-RH increased LH in pregnant women, but not to the extent observed in the follicular and luteal phases. Further, pregnant subjects showed a progressive decrease in the LH response to LH-RH, while FSH concentrations remained unaffected. The findings are in accord with previously reported results.
