Various hypotheses are given for an understanding of the nature of the peripheral control mechanism in the smooth muscle of the esophageal body. A schematic diagram is given of a simple neuronal network that can lead to a caudally moving wave of contraction in the esophageal muscle when excited by either the central vagal connection or by stimulation of local sensory fibers. This provides a working hypothesis for further study.
