In Oct. 1976, in the territory [USSR] of a focus of Borovski disease (cutaneous leishmaniasis) 1 specimen of badger (Meles meles minor Satunin, 1905) was caught. In smears prepared from the ulcers on the front legs, amastigots and in cultures in NNN medium promastigots of Leishmania tropica were discovered. Apparently this species of the animal, a natural carrier of the causative agent, is the cause of the occurrence of a special form of Borovski disease in Georgia. Clinically it is similar to the urban type as a late ulcerating yearling, and epidemiologically it is a natural focus form occuring only sporadically as badgers seldom visit farmsteads.
