Data on the treatment of localized cutaneous leishmaniases (CL) accrued since the last review published in Annales de Dermatologie et de Venereologie in 1988, are reviewed. The pharmacokinetics, mode of administration, tolerance, and side effects are given for pentavalent antimony derivatives (meglumine antimonate and sodium stibogluconate) and for pentamidine. Amphotericin B, paromomycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, allopurinol, disulone, other drugs and immunotherapy are considered briefly. The second section of the paper deals with therapy for New World CL (such as Leishmania braziliensis and L. panamensis) and Old World CL (caused by L. major and L. tropica).
