Healthy men who did not smoke were given a diet low in vitamin C; 2 were given by mouth 6 X 30 mg ascorbic acid and 5 were given 3 X 30 mg ascorbic acid daily. After 2 weeks they were given 5 mu Ci [1-14C]ascorbic acid with 30 or 60 mg unlabelled ascorbic acid. After 4 h a normal diet was allowed and ascorbic acid was increased to 4 X 1000 mg daily for 10 days. Urine was collected from the time the labelled ascorbic acid was given. Between 80 and 90% of the dose was absorbed. The amount of label excreted daily decreased rapidly and by 10 days approached background counting rate.
