Fauna and seasonal prevalence of sandflies (Diptera, Phlebotomides) in foci of visceral leishmaniasis of the Kzyl-Orda region of the Kazakh SSR

Sandflies were caught in villages [Kazakh SSR, USSR] and their surroundings. The method of specimen collection was the same for 1974-1975. Altogether 6 spp. of sandflies were found at 2 most numerous of which were Phlebotomus smirnovi and Sergentomyia arpaklensis. Since the latter usually does not attack man, it cannot be a vector of visceral leishmaniasis. P. smirnovi has a propensity for the river flood-land or places near man irrigation canals where villages are located in which most cases of the disease are reported. The period of active flight of P. smirnovi is from middle May to early Sept. During this period 1 mass generation emerges with a peak of density in early June. In different years with varying meteorological conditions the beginning of phenological phenomena in P. smirnovi may vary within 7-10 days. Throughout the season of active flight male sandflies are most prevalent.
