The properties and structure of betanal, a herbicide used to control monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds in sugar beets, are described. A method is given for determination of betanal in the air using TLC with given conditions for spectrophotometric measurement of the preparation. The sensitivity of the spectrophotometric determination is 1 .mu.kg2 for technical or 3 .mu.kg for chemically pure betanal in the analyzed solution volume, while chromatography has a sensitivity of 3 .mu.kg.
