Husbands and wives of 251 couples who never adopted contraceptive methods and were married more than 5 yr were studied. Out of 251 couples, 57.3% were fertile, having more than 1 live birth, 25.6% were subfertile, having 1 live birth and 17.1% were infertile, having no live birth. Among those couples 59% had identical blood groups, i.e., husbands and wives had same type of blood groups, and 41% had non-identical blood groups, i.e., husbands and wives had different blood groups. Findings lend support to the view that there may be a relationship between the blood groups and fertility pattern of couples and non-identical blood groups among husbands and wives may contribute to infertility in case of couples not practicing family planning methods. In a family planning program more attention may be given to the identical blood group couples who appear to be potentially more fertile and such priority couples can be identified by mass blood grouping in a community.
