An outbreak of Haematobia irritans (L.) on cattle in south Somerset and west Dorset, southern England, in 1976, is described. Some cattle carried over 500 flies, and more than 90% of farms visited were affected. Up to 50 examples of stomoxys calcitrans (L.) also occurred on some cattle. H. irritans was taken on the island of Steep Holm, which is about 8 km from the nearest cattle, and here it is recorded biting man. In this note, the author reports the hyperabundance of Haematobia irritans (L.) on cattle in southern Somerset and western Dorset, UK, during 1976. Attacks of 200 flies/individual were common, and one animal, under treatment for metritis and therefore housed, carried an estimated 1500 flies.
