Acute myocardial infarction is a life-threatening emergency whose appropriate management is still evolving. It is important to make an early and correct diagnosis so that treatment can be instituted as soon as possible. While several drugs are helpful in stabilising these patients the crux of matter is institution of early and definitive revascularisation of blocked artery. Primary PCI is the preferred mode of achieving revasculariaation (except in patients presenting within 2 hours of chest pain, where thrombolysis may be a reasonable alternative) because consistently high IRA patency and high TIMI flow rate is obtained only with this kind of revascularisation, irrespective of time of presentation after AMI.
