Experimental infection of pregnant goats with Akabane virus

Ten pregnant goats received i/v injections of Akabane virus. Although they showed no signs of illness, viraemia persisting for 2-4 days occurred in some of them. Of 10 kids from the seven goats which were kept until spontaneous parturition, one was mummified, three were weak and the others were clinically normal, but five of eight tested had antibodies to Akabane virus in precolostral serum. Twins removed at 120 days gestation from a goat which had been injected at 40 days had antibody in serum from the umbilical cord, and one was morphologically abnormal.
