When methane-oxidizing bacteria Methylomonas methanica were forced into the coal bed under pressure of 100-150 atm, they retained their vital activity. Filtration of bacteria in coal is accompanied by a decrease in their numbers probably caused by adsorption of cells in the coal pore structures and by disruption of some cells during their filtration. The contact of the microorganisms with coal had no inhibitory effect on the intensity of the process of methane oxidation by bacteria but led to the intensification.
