The thyroid gland was studied in 150 male A/He mice aged 1-547 days. Ultimobranchial follicles were found in the gland of animals of all age groups. In young animals they are of small size and irregular shape. After 6-7 mo. their volume increased, and when fusing they formed extensive cysts. The cyst epithelium is a ciliated monolayer; in old animals it became a double layer in some places. The epithelial cells can produce neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides. NADPH-diaphorase and G-6-P-dehydrogenase differentiate the cells into 3 types.
