Cell-mediated immunity to surface (HBsAg) and core (HBcAG) antigens of hepatitis B virus was assayed by the leukocyte migration inhibition test. Leukocytes were collected from 62 patients with various forms of hepatitis B, 7 patients with hepatitis of unknown etiology, 23 convalescents of hepatitis B and 30 healthy subjects. In all the groups investigated reactivity to HBcAg was much more frequent than to HBsAg. No correlation was observed between cell reactivity to HBcAg or HBsAg and severity of hepatic inflammatory lesions.
