The main neuroendocrine and hormonal mechanisms which participate in preparing the mammary gland for physiologic lactation are reviewed, as well as their participation in the synthesis, secretion and expulsion of milk during breast feeding. Also, the results obtained with the therapeutic use of sexual hormones clomiphene, piridoxine, nomiphensine, ergonovine and bromocriptine to inhibit or suppress milk secretion during the post-partum were analyzed, as well as the therapeutic usefulness of the thyrotropin releasing hypothalamic hormone (TRH) and of metoclopramide to stimulate lactation during the puerperium.
