Taxonomy of Sarcocystis and other Coccidia of cats and dogs

Dubey updates his classification of coccidia of cats and dogs [see J. Am. Vet. Med. Ass. 169, 1061-1078 (1976)] in the light of a similar review by Tadros & Laarman, 1976 [see Acta Leidensie 44, 1-107]. The name Endorimospora (Sarcocystis) suihominis is given priority over S. porcihominis from the pig and that of Isospora heydorni over I. wallacei from the dog. S. cruzi and S. hirsuta from cattle are considered to be the dog form and the cat form, respectively. A new genus, Levineia n.g. is proposed for those members of the genus Isospora having intermediate hosts in addition to a direct faecal-oral cycle in the definitive host and whose cycle is not confined to the intestinal tracts, while I. canaria, with a direct faecal-oral cycle only, is retained. I. heydorni of the dog is temporarily placed in the genus Hammondia because of its obligatory 2-host life-cycle. The coccidia of cats and dogs are tabulated with their intermediate hosts and their authors.
