Participation of toxoplasmosis in the etiology of chronic tonsillitis

The complement fixation test was positive for Toxoplasma in 48 (42.5%) of 113 persons with chronic tonsillitis and in 1,407 (44.4%) of 3,168 pregnant women. The range of antibody titres was similar in both groups. Isolation tests on mice using tonsil material from the 3 patients with the highest titres (2 of which were 1:128 and 1:256) were negative. It is concluded that the involvement of toxoplasmosis in chronic tonsillitis is minimal or non-existent. The findings of Jamra et al. (1971), who isolated T. gondii from 3 of 68 tonsillitis patients, are briefly discussed in relation to differences in climate and pathogenicity.
