Chronic tonsillitis and schizophrenia

There were 1000 patients with schizophrenia examined; of these, chronic tonsillitis was diagnosed in 256 cases (107 were suffering from compensated and 149 from decompensated form). Diagnosis of chronic tonsillitis was based on anamnestic, pharyngoscopic, clinical, biochemical, cytological and bacteriological studies and on the results of skin allergic tests with Streptococcus allergen, etc. Chronic tonsillitis is apparently not a direct etiological factor of schizophrenia but may aggravate its clinical course, intensity-autointoxication and inhibit oxidative processes and pathological pulsation, thus enhancing degenerative trophic changes.
