Testicular response to photostimulation by radioluminous implants in the deafferented hypothalamus of quail

Implantation of small pellets (0.6 .times. 0.2 mm) of radioluminous material (RLM) in the infundibular complex (tuberal or dorsal part) led to significant testicular growth in quail reared under non photostimulating photoperiod (6 L) or darkness (DD). Such a direct photostimulation locally applied to the basal hypothalamus was again effective in promoting testes enlargement after complete neural isolation of the hypothalamic region. Neuronal populations of the basal hypothalamus were apparently directly stimulated by the RLM implants, without any participation of retinal photoreceptors. Basal hypothalamic structure seemed to exhibite intrinsic photo sensitivity and gonadostimulating ability.
