Hemodynamic indices were studied by thermodilution in rabbits given injections of papaverine or dibasol alone or on a background of phentolamine. Papaverine (1 mg/kg), dibasol (5 mg/kg and phentolamine (0.5 mg/kg) decreased arterial pressure due to a decrease in general peripheral resistance. With blockage of .alpha.-adrenoreceptors with phentolamine (0.5 mg/kg), papaverine and dibasol did not decrease arterial pressure. This was due to an increase in peripheral resistance which together with a decrease in blood minute volume was a compensatory adaptive reaction.
