The effect of vibration on the F wave in normal man

In man a late response (F wave) resulting from the activation of a few motor units can be recorded from a distal muscle following supramaximal stimulation of the motor nerve. In relaxed normal man this response probably results not from the reflex activation of motoneurons by muscle afferents, but from their recurrent activation by the antidromic volley in the motor nerve. Probably the late response resulting from supramaximal stimulation of the motor nerve to a relaxed distal muscle of normal man results, predominantly, from the antidromic discharge of motor units. The F wave was unaffected by muscle vibration capable of causing complete inhibition of the monosynaptic reflex.
