Life-cycle and geographical distribution of Paramphistomum daubneyi Dinnik, 1962 (Trematoda: Paramphistomata)

The life-cycle of Paramphistomum daubneyi was followed using Lymnaea truncatula and goats. The eggs, miracidium, sporocyst, redia, cercaria and metacercaria are described and figured. Of 80 L. auricularia, 420 L. peregra, 98 L. stagnalis, 884 L. truncatula and 124 Planorbis planorbis exposed to newly hatched miracidia, only 60 to 70% of L. truncatula and 3 to 5% of L. peregra became infected. Eggs were found in the faeces of a goat 12 and 13 weeks after being fed 1500 metacercariae; 536 sexually mature flukes were recovered at post-mortem examination. Differences between this species and P. microbothrium are discussed. P. daubneyi is restricted to Europe, Kenya and Ethiopia.
