Experimental infections with the so-called Haemophillus somnus in the calf. Comparison of strains with different virulence

The pathogenicity of six strains of H. somnus isolated in Switzerland and of two American strains was examined and compared in experimental infections in 15 calves. A marked difference of virulence was observed between the American and Swiss strains and among the Swiss strains themselves. Infectious septicaemic thrombotic meningoencephalomyelitis of different degrees of severity was reproduced in 14 calves. The main lesions were seen in the CNS and respiratory system. It seems that the primary lesion of the vascular endothelium is caused by an endotoxin-like substance.
