Temperature-sensitive mutants of P. multocida were isolated, in vitro characteristics studied and their virulence in mice compared with that of temperature-resistant revertants. A single immunization of mice with a temperature-sensitive antigen did not give protection against the wild strain injected at more than 100 times the lethal dose. However, some basic immunity was given as shown by delay in mortality. Two injections of antigen protected 75% and three injections 100% of animals. [For Parts I and II see VB 47, abst 3542].
