Additional foci of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria in East Kalimantan and West Irian, Indonesia

During 1965 to 1975, 8 cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria were imported into Japan from Kalimantan and areas to the east. 6 of these cases were resistant to chloroquine both in vivo and in vitro. All were successfully cured by a single dose of pyrimethamine plus sulphadoxine or sulphamonomethoxine. 4 of the resistant cases came from East Kalimantan and 2 from West Iran. This paper gives detailed reports on the last 4 patients seen.
