Simulataneous administration of estradiol benzoate and progesterone to adult female and male rats for 10 days increased the thyroid wt, stimulated the secretory activity of the thyroid epithelium, predominantly increasing the colloid storage in the follicles. The thyroid became more sensitive to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). All the effects were more pronounced in females. In ovariectomized rats, the structure of the thyroid gland was similar to that of colloid goiter and sensitivity to TSH was lowered. In castrated males proliferation and secretion of thyroid epithelium were stimulated and the reaction of the thyroid gland to estradiol and progesterone was stronger than in intact males. A simultaneous administration of estradiol benzoate, progesterone and TSH to castrated males was followed by functional overstressing of the thyroid gland.
