Inductive events play a decisive role in the development of an embryo and in the regenerative processes in adult organisms. Evidence for contact-mediated tissue interactions is based on 2 examples. The 1st is the mammalian kidney model system where the morphogenesis of the kidney depends on the interaction of 2 distinct tissue components, the epithelium and the mesenchyme. Differentiation does not take place if the 2 tissues are separated. The 2nd example utilizes transfilter experiments where embryonic spinal cord induces kidney tubules through Millipore filters. The evidence based on the kidney model system favors contact-mediated transmission of inductive signals.
