Effects of prostaglandin F2alpha and indomethacin on the length of pseudopregnancy in the hamster

Hamster females were mated with vasectomised males , and were examined daily during pseudopregnancy. Groups of 5-6 females were injected on day 5 of pseudopregnancy with 1, 5, 10 or 30 mu g PGF2 alpha , or were injected intraperitoneally with 2.5 or 5.0 mu g indomethacin on days 7 or 8, or on days 7 and 8, or subcutaneously on days 7, 8, 9 and 10, or were injected subcutaneously with 5.0 mg indomethacin daily on days 7, 8 and 9 and with 30 mu g PGF2 alpha on day 8. A group of 14 untreated females served as controls. Injection of 5, 10 or 30 mu g PGF2 alpha induced oestrus 2-4 days later, and the duration of pseudopregnancy was correlated (-0.87) with log dose PGF2 alpha . Injection of indomethacin intraperitoneally for 2 days or subcutaneously for 4 days prolonged pseudopregnancy by 0.8 and 3 days resp., but this effect was suppressed when a luteolytic dose of PGF2 alpha was administered simultaneously.
