Respiration rates in rat liver mitochondria at the V0 stage (before substrate and ADP are added) were inversely proportional to K levels. In stage V2 (after addition of succinate), respiration rates were 10.83 .+-. 2.6 and 6.89 .+-. 1.05 at 25 and 50 mM K levels, respectively. With an increase in K levels to 100 and 120 mM, respiration rate decreased to 4.23 .+-. 1.1 and 5.50 .+-. 0.9 (P = 0.5 .+-. 0.02), respectively. In V3 (after ADP was added), O2 utilization was 8.74 .+-. 2.1, 5.92 .+-. 0.8, 5.87 .+-. 1.2 and 5.17 .+-. 0.2 at K levels of 25, 50, 100 and 120 mM, respectively. Changes in respiratory control rate (V3/V4 where V4 is the rate after completion of phosphorylation) were directly proportional to K levels.
