The activity of ethambutol was studied with experimental tuberculosis of animals. Three experiments on 145 albino mice and 2 experiments on 70 guinea pigs were performed. Ethambutol was used for treatment in different doses from 25 up to 200 mg/kg, at different times after the infection (during its initial development and during its generalization) and for different periods from 3 wk up to 4.5 mo. With acute tuberculosis of albino mice and subacute tuberculosis of guinea pigs ethambutol in doses of 100-200 mg/kg inhibited development of the tuberculous infection and caused a partial reverse development of specific affections. Prolongation of treatment and its earlier beginning after the infection increased efficacy of therapy. Even a prolonged ethambutol application (4-4.5 mo.) did not provide for complete disappearance of tuberculosis mycobacteria.
