Serum concentration of isoniazid administered with & without ethambutol in pulmonary tuberculosis patients

Isoniazid was administered (300 mg orally) after overnight fasting at 8 am to 10 patients of pulmonary tuberculosis with normal renal and liver function; 7 of these patients were slow acetylators and 3 rapid acetylators of isoniazid. The mean serum concentrations of isoniazid (.mu.g/ml) were 4.08 .+-. 0.90, 2.29 .+-. 0.80, 1.29 .+-. 0.40 at 2, 4 and 6 h respectively. After a drug-free interval of three days, the same patients were administered isoniazid and ethambutol (20 mg/kg) in a single dose. The serum levels of isoniazid measured at 2, 4 and 6 h were not significantly different. Simultaneous administration of ethambutol failed to influence the serum concentration of isoniazid, irrespective of the acetylation status of the patients.
