Quantitative in vivo colony forming technique was used to demonstrate the immunological similarity between tumor antigen and fetal antigen using fetal liver cells as immunogenic population and as a source of fetal colony forming units. Inbred mice in different groups were immunized i.p. 5 times with 1 .times. 107 viable 5000 R irradiated fetal liver cells of 4 times with 1 .times. 107 irradiated tumor cells. To test the effect of immunization with non-specific antigens, mice were immunized in groups with 1 .times. 107 irradiated normal adult spleen cells, liver cells and bone marrow cells. Seven days after the last immunization, these mice were exposed to 750 R whole body irradiation and 22 h later injected with viable fetal liver cells by intraocular route. The mice were sacrificed after 8 days and the number of colonies formed in spleens in these groups and untreated controls were compared. Colony forming unit technique was also used to demonstrate the maternal immunity to fetal antigens. An immunological similarity exists between the tumor antigen and the fetal antigen as revealed by in vivo colony forming unit technique. A strong post-partal immunity was found in multiparous mice.
