The alpha, beta adrenolytic effect on catecholaminergic mobilization of the plasma free fatty acids in the intact and the adrenalectomized dog

A perfusion of epinephrine, norepinephrine or isoprenaline provoked a rise of plasma free fatty acids [FFA] in fasting awake dogs. This effect is abolished by administration of propranolol, a blocking agent. Phentolamine potentiated the rise of FFA in response to norepinephrine or epinephrine but not to isoprenaline. In adrenalectomized fasting dogs, isoprenaline only induced elevation of plasma FFA, but when combined with phentolamine, norepinephrine or epinephrine it also induced a FFA mobilization.
