The authors investigated the metabolism of ethyl benzene in 20 subjects using 8-hour inhalation tests in a gas chamber. During a state of retention equilibrium 45-50% of the inhaled hydrocarbon is retained in the lungs. The main metabolite in man is mandelic acid, to which about two thirds of the absorbed ethyl benzene are converted. An exposure test for ethyl benzene was worked out, consisting in determination of mandelic acid in the urine. As the maximum permissible average concentration is recommended 0.2 mg. ethyl benzene/litre of air, i.e. ca. 50 ppm to which corresponds approximately 500 mg. mandelic acid/litre of urine at the end of the working shift (i.e. the duration of exposure). The maximum permissible peak concentration was recommended 1.0 mg. ethyl benzene/litre air, i.e. ca. 250 ppm.
