Towards the end of pregnancy, a Pakistani woman in England developed general malaise, anorexia and jaundice followed by right hypochondrial pain, generalized pruritus and fever but no hepatosplenomegaly. A blood film showed Plasmodium vivax. She was treated orally with chloroquine phosphate 450 mg. base for 4 days, followed by primaquine phosphate 15 mg. daily for 10 days. Labour began spontaneously one day after admission and a healthy female infant was delivered normally. The implications of malaria during pregnancy for the mother and child are discussed.
