Ultrastructural study of mixed tumour of the human salivary gland

Seven biopsies of mixed salivary gland tumors were studied by light microscopy and EM. Submicroscopic investigations revealed epithelial and mesenchymal proliferative areas in the tumor. They are described separately as epithelial, myxoid, chondroid and cartilaginous patterns. The ultrastructure of the tumor cells showed many fine structural alterations from that of normal cells. The tumor exhibited a unique mixture of epithelial cells and cells which resembled normal mesenchymal cells in the myxoid and chondrocartilaginous areas. The term mixed tumor was more acceptable than pleomorphic adenoma.
