A preliminary report on the total amylase activity and the isoamylase composition of saliva in malignant and benign conditions of the salivary gland to assess their value in differential diagnosis is presented. The benign conditions studied comprised mainly those of submucous fibrosis, a condition peculiar to Indians, on which no biochemical data is available. The significance of the findings are discussed.
