Digitalis toxicity may occur in even the best of hands and is the result of administering too much of the drug in a specific instance. The concept that digitalis toxicity can occur in an individual without altering a previously acceptable digitalis dosage level is somewhat more subtle. This depends upon an alteration of body electrolytes, primarily that of potassium. The oral thiazide diuretics are very efficacious and widely used. However, they have the ability to reduce body potassium significantly, which in turn may result in toxicity in a digitalized patient.
