The effect of total histone and its fractions on embryonic development was compared in White Leghorn embryos in 2 critical periods. In the 1st period (about the 36th h of incubation), the degree of impairment of the caudal morphogenetic system was evaluated after the subgerminal injection of total histone or its fractions in a dose of 30 .mu.g. In the 2nd period (after 96 h incubation), survival and the development of the characteristic malformation syndrome was studied in embryos to which the lysine- and arginine-rich fractions were administered intraamniotically in the same doses. Although the mechanism of the action of histone on the embryos in the 2 periods was manifestly different, the arginine-rich fractions were significantly more active in every case. The results support the hypothesis that histone influences embryonic development in the organogenetic period otherwise than through its direct interaction with genetic information.
