The mast cells in the laryngeal and tracheal mucosa of rats exposed to the action of irritating fumes

The author performed the following research to discover if an irritative condition can influence the morphology of tracheal and laryngeal Mastzellen and if the possible changes are proportional to the irritative intensity. Of ten alpine rats two have been killed by means of gas fumes and examined as control animals; eight have been treated with formolo fumes for a period from 2 to 10 days. At the beginning the author observed an apparent decrease of Ma because of a « degranulation » process; in a following period the Ma appeared increased regarding their number and the granuli in each of them; in addition the author observed some fused and stelliformed cells which he recognized as Ma for the presence of metacromatic granuli in their cytoplasma. The author supposes that the « degranulation » process could be considered the sign of a true secretion of the Ma - as unicellular glands - and the increase of Ma could be determined by a trasformation of the normal fibrociti.
